I just had to zip up to SLC for a quick doctor's appointment. So there I am on the table, undressed from the waist down and Doctor Rappleye comes in as usual... happy and whistling. I am happy, baby was happily kicking. He turns the doppler on, places it on my stomach and NOTHING. No sound. Then there was a sound. Not the usual heartbeat sound but 6 beats in a 25 second period. Then Rapp goes "oh baby... don't you do this to me" and then he starts pushing on my stomach very forcefully. Then he sits me up and says "go straight to the hospital and I will meet you there with your chart."
So I drive my self over there. Talking to Raleigh the whole time, who was at work and closing that night to make it worse. I could hear panic in his voice and I knew he was walking really fast. And even though I knew it was serious, I was very calm.
They hooked me up to a monitor and she sounded really good. With an occasional dip of course but followed up by an excelleration which the nurse said was good. Not too long after I'd been there Raleigh and Shauna walked in and I felt so much better. As they were arriving, we got word that Rapp was going to start me and we'd have a baby tonight. "I'm not ready... I don't have any socks, I don't have my things, my bedding is at home in the washing machine, my house isn't clean..." Shauna, in true Shauna Fashion starts fixing all my problems. Off to Nordstrom she goes to buy cute socks, stopping at Build a Bear... to Build a Bear, arranging for Russ to stop by our house and pick up everything we own the whole time telling me everything was going to be alright and telling Raleigh to massage me, hold my hand, telling the nurses to come check me, telling everyone in the room to talk quietly, telling Lindsay to give me a head massage, she even made sure the anesthesologist wasn't scaring me with all of his medical talking. It was all about me and I couldn't have done it without her. Mom and Dad were on their way from St. George all was at that point going well.
We laid there, watched a movie, laughed, planned and no dilating was happening, significant dips in heartbeat could be heard and the nurses had worried looks. The thought was that the cord was wrapped around our baby's neck and with every contraction her heart would almost stop.
Mom and Dad arrived at 11:30, I think, and the situation was getting a little scary. So at 1:30, the decision to have a C-section, to save our baby's life, was made and in what seemed like a dream off we went to the OR. Half hour later I could hear my sweet baby crying and I was crying and Raleigh was crying and she was perfect... and it was over.
Raleigh watched the entire procedure and was more than facinated by it which was a relief to me since I was overwhelmed with the guilt of robbing him out of a traditional birth. He promises he is okay with it. I think he must be because there is not a dad on this earth that loves their daughter more than him. I know that one of these days I will get to hold her.
Anyway... in an attempt to not make this story any longer... I will introduce the most beautiful baby in the world... Peyton Jo Lund.
Here we are thinking everything was fine and a normal birth was going to take place in a little while. See we are happy and care free and not too worried.
