The Holy War....

In this context, it referes to a battle between BYU (LDS church owned) and the University of Utah, the flagship and secular institution of higher education in the state of Utah. The Holy War is one of America's oldest and most heated college football rivalries. In fact, the schools even differ on when the first game was played. Utah claims that the first game was played in 1896 against Brigham Young Academy. BYU's athetic website shows their schedule dating back to 1922, but no earlier. The Utes lead the all time series 53-33-4.Unfortunately, BYU has won the last two matchups in 2006 and 2007 but the last 20 meetings have been split evenly at 10 wins apiece.

An overwhelming majority of BYU fans belong to the LDS Church, much of the Ute fan-base is LDS as well. And while the LDS Church owns BYU, some of the Church’s top leadership attended and graduated from the University of Utah. Brigham Young, the second President of the LDS Church, and the man for whom BYU is named, interestingly, founded the University of Deseret, which later became the University of Utah when it was bought out by other state residents. Another former Church President, David O. McKay, played right guard for Utah’s first football team in 1894. A current apostle, Joseph B. Wirthlin, also played football for the Utes.

This coming Saturday at 4 p.m. the Runnin' Utes will take on the Cougars. It's been a year since the nightmare where the Cougs converted on 4th and 18 and eventually scored for a come-from-behind victory. It pains me to say this with a BYU alumnist as my wonderful wife but the Utes are just going to pick the Cougs apart, even worse than TCU. The Utes have a BCS bowl game on the line so losing is not an option. Little Family, I still think there's time for me to send you a shirt or something....Nana, I'll even let you borrow my helmet so you don't hurt your head after Bronco calls a silly play that results in an interception that's ran back for 6. I'll be watching my Utes get the 'W' in a family full of Cougars.

NO COMMENT!! We'll just wait to see how this all plays out on Saturday! No shirt necessary and definitely No Helmet, but thanks for the offer! Bronco is STILL way cuter than Kyle and nicer and classier so we'll just see who calls the bad plays. Who's on the Lord's Side, Who?

Raleigh,

I sent you an e-mail. Just a little reminder before the game on Saturday. I have been introduced all week to that lovely UofU website that is dedicated to the hatred of BYU. I prefer to use the phrase Jealousy of BYU :)

See you tomorrow/Friday
